What are essential oils, exactly?

Essential oils are volatile liquids extracted from plant materials and are used to support the body in a variety of ways. For example, some essential oils can help stop blood flow, while others are wonderful at supporting emotions and creating uplifting atmospheres! They are potent liquids that can affect each individual differently, so one solution for one person may not be an exact fit for another.

How can I know if essential oils are right for me?

Essential oils are very interesting plant products. They affect each individual differently, so it is difficult to state generically if essential oils are "right" for someone. However, to get more specific, it depends on a variety of factors. For example, the number and type of medications one might be taking can significantly impact the number and types of essential oils available to the individual because certain essential oils are known to have potential drug interactions with certain medication types. As another example, because essential oils are such potent liquids, it is very important to highly dilute or avoid altogether certain types of essential oils for children. Pets also fall into this category of concern. Other determining factors also include medical history and pre-existing conditions. If you aren't sure if essential oils are right for you, reach out to us and we can help you determine this through a Private Client Consultation!

Why is it so important to prioritize advice from Certified Aromatherapists?

Here at Ampersand Essentials Aromatherapy, we personally believe that a Certified Aromatherapist® possesses knowledge that is imperative to fully understanding essential oils, their uses, safety concerns, and applications. In order to call yourself a Certified Aromatherapist®, you must go through a series of courses and pass final exams (including Anatomy and Physiology) that are approved by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA), the governing body of the Aromatherapy industry. I have taken over 125 credit hours of coursework, graduated from The School for Aromatic Studies, and obtained my Legal Certification as a Certified Aromatherapist®. I also am required to complete at least 30 continuing education hours each year, which helps me to keep up to date on the ever-evolving world of Alternative Medicine!

Why are you so particular about essential oil brands?

By using essential oil brands and companies that have questionable practices and histories, you cannot guarantee that their oils are indeed pure. Impure essential oils are oils that have fillers, synthetics, and other unnatural products mixed in with them to make the oil either last longer or stretch out further across more bottles in production. Often times, these come in liquid forms of plastic, ethanols, and petroleum, all of which are INCREDIBLY dangerous to inhale, absorb into the skin, and/or ingest. If we used impure essential oils, we would be putting not only our health at risk, but yours as well. Our company is different in the fact that we personally care about you, the consumer. Your health is of utmost importance to us, so that's why we don't cut corners when choosing good and trustworthy essential oil brands. Fillers and synthetics have medically been known and researched to cause allergic reactions, irritations, and adverse effects to the immune system, along with other bodily systems and functions. Because of all of these things, we understand that picking a trustworthy brand and distiller is of utmost importance in order to protect ourselves, our clients, and our customers. This is why our two main essential oil distillers are Edens Garden Essential Oils and Young Living Essential Oils. Depending on demand and availability, we may use other brands, but this happens very rarely and we do extensive research before choosing a brand as a substitute.

Do you teach ingesting essential oils?

To be clear, there are many opinions on ingesting essential oils, so please make sure you do your own research on this topic before jumping into making a decision. Just because one resource says it is or is not safe doesn't mean it's the be-all-end-all of the industry. With that being said, I took it upon myself to enroll in an additional class through The School for Aromatic Studies to properly educate myself in the realm of ingesting essential oils. I understand the safety concerns and am practiced in this form of use. Because of this, I personally feel much more comfortable discussing this area with you and to see if it is a good fit for your goals and your health. This can be determined during our Private Client Consultation appointment, if you so choose to pursue this path of essential oil use.
